Shrug and Vooooorn

Hal "Im afraid I cant let you put that track on..."
The sound rack-on display at the amazing Civic Underground. Truly a club built
for DJs and quality.

SHRUG
, the monthly night at Civic underground, did the rounds last friday to a pretty packed Civic. The night is very musically focused in that it mixes established as well as emerging DJs on the scene. Minimal, house and techno all made appearances last Friday from DJs Walka, Robbie Lowe, Dave and Chrise Combe

Robbie the 'headliner' had a full 2 hours to play with so I was very excited to see where he would take things. Starting off a little chilled and housier than Walka, who played before him, Robbie coaxed the remaining people sitting down onto the dance floor in what could be said to be quite a housy set. I was hoping to hear some of his expertly mixed deep-house, tech and techno but alas the mood of the night was called for something more chilled and it really did show it by the middle of his set. Even though it was a little 'soft' for me, ie. at one stage the song was quite a vocal house affair, it suited the floor and mood of the punters completely.

By the last half hour of Robbie set things did pick up the pace with some more driving tech-house tunes making an appearance. It was great set that suited the night but ultimately left me wanting more edgier unreleased tunes..but then again I personally love pushing the crowd with something new but this doest always work or suit. No doubt COLOR night next weekend run by Robbie and Co for the famous Color mixes, will feature many a new tune.

Walka, who I had the pleasure of hearing for the first time really impressed, me anyway. Some great minimal and tech-house tunes along with some golden oldies, think Ilario Alicante, that definitely progressed the night well. Will be seeing him in the cave next time around for sure!

Chris, although I only caught half of his set, played really well with some great techno to get every going in the last hour of the night. Not his best (i.e. not an amazing 2hour Sunday School set) but a definite up-n-comer of the scene in which 09 should hold big things for..

Touch screen controller, 4 track layoyt on Traktor Pro, funktion one = Win!

JORIS VOORN, played at nevermind last night to huge applause. Imagine 4 tracks going through traktor Pro, touch screen midi controller for effects + samples (I think) all going through the DJM800 mixer and you have a platform from something great!

This style is pioneered by Ritche Hawtin who reguarly mixes with 8 tracks or more while DJing over 2 mac books and A&H mixer...

The amazing thing is even though they may be 4 tracks going at one time the whole process is extremely organic in that every track flows and complements each other. This is as much a testament to the DJs skills as it is to the amazing software that is Traktor Pro. Sure your tracks are all beatmatched all for you but this just opens the door to more creative processes in DJing, so Im not complaining.

This shined in Joris set. I'll admit he is not one of my favourites, I own very little of Joris's tracks and past sets I have heard from him were only OK in my books but clearly he has progressed.

Promoting his new mix for the Balance CD series, which also come from Australia, he made it into the Guiness Book of records for the amazing fact that he 2 disk mix CD features 102 tracks!! Thats ridiculous! I'll definitely be getting a copy asap and giving you guys a review of it.

Back to Joris's set however, there is one word that I think summed up his entire set. funky. Funky tech-house, funky techno both the main staple of the set that had the whole dancefloor heaving throughout the night until the end of his set (somewhere after 4am). I think the man himself was enjoying it too going over time at the end.

Luciano & Greg Wilson pics & Videos - one/two amazing party!

LUCIANO!!!

What can I say, the party is well and truly over and everyone has recovered but the vibe keeps on going, kinda like an aftershock of an earthquake. I cant not stop thinking of the epic break downs Luciano pulls and the awesome retro (never though I would say that) Greg Wilson so seemly effortlessly played out.

For those of you from overseas Luciano played a very special concert in Sydney on a very unique boat. The Boat party had its fair share of tales, closed toilets, someone getting a bang in the face but my favourite was Luciano ARRIVING BY WATER TAXI! As the boat left he was still arriving at the airport after playing another gig in Melbourne! How Jet-set is that!

Here's a little Video of it

Greg Wilson played on the top deck and was a favourite for many as we all waited until Luciano arrived. He played a perfect new disco/retro set as well as playing with his reel to reel player!! The man has a lot of experience and this showed in this amazing set. I have never heard anyone mix in songs like these in such a way in all my comparatively short life!

KEEP IT REEL (Back of Greg Wilson Laptop sticker ;)

Luciano stepped up on the decks to literally destroy the dance floor. His unique take on DJing is very South American to me with driving tribal rhythms that are overlaid with with technoy sounds. Everyone went a bit loco in DC10 style with loads of jumping up action check it out below;

and one of my fav songs of the boat set;

Of course those that didnt know, Luciano played a second gig that same night at Sydneys newest club NEVERMIND. Those that got there early were in for a treat as Luciano rocked up at 10 and decided to jump on!! He than went on to tear the place down with a definitely darker vibe taking us on till 2am where he had to call it quits. The man did look fair tired at the end of it!

Some of my favourite pics from BOTH the Yacht party and the KINK nevermind club gig. Be sure to check out the gallery for more ;) they're all high resolution pics in the gallery so feel free to make them desktop pics or whatever just nothing on posters with out emailing me first!!!

Tom Clark this sat! @ KINK

Hey guys quick heads up as my blogs have not being coming the usual amount I think without I doubt the BEST gig in town this weekend is this Sat @ KINK who have teamed up with Pulse Radio to bring us Tom Clark of Highgrade records from Berlin. His not the 'biggest' Berlin star to have hit our shores but he sure is quality, I love his remix of Ung & Bastos - I Dont Eat and apparently his more housey than some of his Berlin counterparts so It will be an interesting night thats for sure! Expect nothing but quality for the first international to hit the decks of KINK @ nevermind...

Also just to say thanks for reading my blog mention "Syd Loves Techno" for discounted entry this sat!

Here some tunes from the man to give you a taste of what might be played

The LED screen gives the DJ Stage another dimension, not only for the a VJ but all in terms of relating visuals to music

From Kink Relaunch @ Nevermind

Put simply, wow! Nevermind is the awesome new club designed by Sydney Promoter Scott Robertson who became known Australia wide for his insane Saturday night parties at The Arthouse, namely KINK! Nevermind is somewhere you can spend hours, no, maybe days! Despite the fact that place is only a small boutique night club. If you haven't checked it out yet or dont no what I'm talking about its Sydney's newest addition to its night life and its a kicker!

Think the best DJs in Sydney playing some of the best new electronic music, namely minimal, techno, house and tech-house on the best sound-system in Australia. This coupled with a Vodka bar (where I had some of the best tasting cocktails Ive had in a while!), seats overlooking the dance floor where you can still talk and clearly hear the music, a smoking terrace which overlooks Oxford street in all its glory and of course a dance floor in front of a massive LED screen for the VJs to 'trip us out on' and world famous Fuktion One sound-system! = epicccccc!

Friday night was good even though it was little thin on numbers, it ended up being like an industry night with quite a few DJs and promoters popping in to check the place out from what I gather. Kink the relaunch party was gold! The club was not full but still pumping. The cool thing was the vibe, everyone there was just enjoying the great music being pumped out by Murat Kilic, having a dance and chilling around. In many ways it was great to be there on its opening weekend before the rest of Sydney gets in on the action! Next weekend its big having Deepchild playing a live set in promotion of his new album departure!

Update Jan 2010: As of early 2010 Nevermind will be running specific one off side-shows, recently hosting a special extended set by Danny Tenaglia, which was a very special night indeed. The club has yet to fully 'find-its-feet' however normal trading nights Friday and Saturday will be booked mostly 'gay-nights' however anyone can go. Updates as I get them or check the weekly gig-guide.

just for some more HYPE!!

locodisco @ nevermind! A new friday night!

I will be doing a separate post on the amazing club that is to be nevermind...but for now:

Sounds quirky, interesting and more importantly its in the brain child of ubercool promoter come club owner Scott...this will be one of the new friday nights, I loved the official promo so I'll just paste that in:

hello! we are locodisco. we bring stone-cold classic disco jams and forward thinking house & techno in one raucous party, just for you.

come for our first dance with LUKE McD (smashbang!, lost baggage - melbourne) and ANDEE VAN DAMAGE (honkytonks, 3rd class - melbourne) doing a disco/techno thing for dancers: all up, all in, party animals getting wonky to the funktion one or coyly drunken romance in the vodka bar.

other attractions: the locodisco athletic squad (PERFECT SNATCH, MAGIC HAPPENS, ASH LE ROUGE and VIVI NOT DISCO) demonstate their happening opening moves and late night tuff guys MATTTTTTTT & TOMAS helm it bouncy techno style to kick off the endless weekend in style.

did we mention the FUNKTION ONE? will a certain club owner get up in the dj booth and hype the crowd up like a scottish flavor flav? will mattt do his best luciano impression? will you blinded by the tricked out lighting?

find out friday october 3 from 2100hr, nevermind, oxfordstrasse 163.
