Top Notch Rooftop Party (with REBOOT & Emerson Todd)

Top Notch Rooftop party series
continues with its second instalment, this time featuring ex Sydney man Emerson Todd visiting from Europa as well as one massive international who I can not name but will definitely surprise and delight many! Locals will include Robbie Lowe, Matt and Tomas, Trinity, Dave Stuart and more . As for the international I will say he is bit of the techno man-of-the-moment....

Q:For those who haven't heard of the Top Notch rooftop parties, explain a little about what inspired you to put them on and the location of the party.

The Sydney clubbing scene is very much all similar with its dark and dingy little clubs pumping out heavy tech house and techno, so we looked to create something a little different to spice up the Sydney clubbing culture. We wanted to put the focus on daytime entertainment with the main draw card being the sun. In essence we wanted to create a bit of the Ibiza daytime parties right here in Sydney. We have created a party like no one else's, having some of the best in Local and International Dj's in some of Sydney's hottest sun filled venue's.

Q:I hear there is a rather large international headlining alongside Emerson Todd, can we get the first scoop?

The International head liner with be released to the public on Monday 7th of December!

UPDATE: Reboot will be playing this Saturday for an afternoon set under the Sydney sun.

Q: Will there be more Top Notch parties in the future? And any hints as to who may be playing?

TOP NOTCH will be running once a month and will be having its residency at Home Rooftop for the foreseeable future. All monthly parties will feature massive international head liners alongside some of Australia's best local talent!

TOP NOTCH DATES UPCOMING DATES:
- 12/12/09 - Top Notch Presents Emerson Todd + Reboot
- 09/01/10
- 27/02/10

Earthdance party this weekend ft. Slam & Silicone Soul!

Slam

Oh, you heard right. Apparently these two techno heavy weights from the renowned Soma label, Slam and Silicone Soul, will be hitting up the Aussie country side along some awesome local talent for an Earthdance members party this weekend!

Starting this Friday and going till some time Sunday, the campout will be an intimate 3-day event encompassing music, art and lifestyle held 2 hours away from Sydney near Newcastle on private property. The venue features rivers and plenty of grass, shade and includes basic camping facilities.

You'd be forgiven if you only just heard about this, as it has been kept quite hush hush with the idea behind it being the famous Earthdance party returning to its bush roots with a crew and members camp-out for everyone who has contributed over the years and made the event possible.

Local talent includes the likes of Jamie Lloyd, Jimi Polar, Robbie Lowe and Tim Culbert, Diatribe, Marco, Aubusson, Logan Baker and more!

Rumour has it that Slam will be playing sunset and Silicone Soul will be playing sunrise...check out Slam's recent Monopod Podcast. Starting slow with some deep, chilled out dub before progressing into housier and techier territory. A perfect accompaniment to the Sydney Summer.

In2Deep

This Friday a new local night kicks off here in Sydney with a focus on the 'deeper' sounds of electronic music. From the brain child of nights Sunday School (with sets appearing on this blog and many past posts on the night), Shrug and now In2Deep this is a night about getting deep and down with the underground alongside a few of the best deepest and creepiest Sydney DJs.

As the promo says: This is another adventure down those dodgy stairs to the realms of the seedy intimate venue we all love, that always has heads nodding, feet shuffling and jaws dropping, along to bass, treble and groove It’s these elements that you wish you heard more of but never find.

Those dodgy stairs are of course The Bunker which has become somewhat of an infamous venue here in Sydney with many amazing local sets as wells as surprise international sets going down every weekend. I'm compiling DJ sets recorded at the bunker over various different nights for one release of underground goodness so if you have any please pass on the links and comment below!

Robbie Lowe takes the helm and if you haven't already done so do check out his COLOUR mix series below. Fellow Colour mixer Tim Culbert also takes on closing duties while recently returned local-big-shot Carlos Zarate on warm-up duties. DJs Trinity, easily one of the best female mnml-tech DJs going around in Aus, and Dave Stuart go back to back for what will definitely be one beautiful slab of serious deepness...

Space Cadets DJ sets from 9th April, easter special!

Easily our most successful Space Cadets since starting this little night a few months back. Musically the sets by everyone were seriously top-notch! I heard some amazing new tunes as well as great mixing by all. Have a listen to the sets, you'll not be disappointed. We had packed dance floor throughout the night right until closing time at 5am! If it wasn't for the Easter Friday laws (every pub and club must close at 5am for some reason, argh) we would of gone on for longer!

A Huge Thank you goes out to Robbie Lowe who played an excellent set taking us through some great new progressive and house tunes as well as Dane Austin who treated us with a live set (check the video below) with the deep, techy and even a little dubstep sounds of Mr Austin. Also our headlining VJ Darko showed us 'how its done' with a great array of colourful, trippy and bizarre visuals and graphics, however words really cant do justice for VJs so definitely come and check him out at a future Space Cadets if your around the area.

Other DJs on the night were myself (Jamie Tek) managing to bash out some Audion, the new Reboot new track Ronson, which was extremely well received, as well as some Daypyk and some awesome new Tom Clark & Daniel Dreier tracks. Unfortunately my recorder lost its 'juice' halfway through my set so consider it a littler taster of what happened in those early hours. Also after my set Timmy Maxwell dropped by for a 'surprise' set with me, Timmy and Alex playing tunes until close.

Chris Leffers started the night out with some extremely funky minimal house tracks that were perfect to get the groove going, after which Nic Scali took over to give us a good dosage of some of the lastest tech-house and minimal tracks going around right now. Alex Caminer warmed up for Robbie Lowe with a great moody techno track selection that had the floor heaving. Think italoboyz and Radioslave latest monster Koma Koma.

Colour Visions

Awesome mix alert!

From the 'mixers' of the the infamous COLOUR mixes that floated around Sydney and the internet all last year come their 09 instalments, COLOUR VISIONS

First one off the block comes from none other than Robbie Lowe. As with all COLOUR mixes COLOUR VISIONS 001 is an expertly mixed hour and a bit long journey of house music with a definite direction into the more 'minimal' flavours of tech and progressive sounds. The mix flows and progresses in a some-what laid back manner typical of Robbies style but still builds in an engaging way. In my opinion its a different side of Robbie compared to his last Colour mixes but one thats very welcomed.

Its a mix that translates onto an underground dance floor or a perfect sound track to city travelling (as with me!)

Truthfully I would say it is not as 'rounded' as some of his other mixes in that it leavs the listener hanging in some ways at the end but bare in mind this is the first mix of the year with more to to come, so in that respect its a great mix.

Shrug and Vooooorn

Hal "Im afraid I cant let you put that track on..."
The sound rack-on display at the amazing Civic Underground. Truly a club built
for DJs and quality.

SHRUG
, the monthly night at Civic underground, did the rounds last friday to a pretty packed Civic. The night is very musically focused in that it mixes established as well as emerging DJs on the scene. Minimal, house and techno all made appearances last Friday from DJs Walka, Robbie Lowe, Dave and Chrise Combe

Robbie the 'headliner' had a full 2 hours to play with so I was very excited to see where he would take things. Starting off a little chilled and housier than Walka, who played before him, Robbie coaxed the remaining people sitting down onto the dance floor in what could be said to be quite a housy set. I was hoping to hear some of his expertly mixed deep-house, tech and techno but alas the mood of the night was called for something more chilled and it really did show it by the middle of his set. Even though it was a little 'soft' for me, ie. at one stage the song was quite a vocal house affair, it suited the floor and mood of the punters completely.

By the last half hour of Robbie set things did pick up the pace with some more driving tech-house tunes making an appearance. It was great set that suited the night but ultimately left me wanting more edgier unreleased tunes..but then again I personally love pushing the crowd with something new but this doest always work or suit. No doubt COLOR night next weekend run by Robbie and Co for the famous Color mixes, will feature many a new tune.

Walka, who I had the pleasure of hearing for the first time really impressed, me anyway. Some great minimal and tech-house tunes along with some golden oldies, think Ilario Alicante, that definitely progressed the night well. Will be seeing him in the cave next time around for sure!

Chris, although I only caught half of his set, played really well with some great techno to get every going in the last hour of the night. Not his best (i.e. not an amazing 2hour Sunday School set) but a definite up-n-comer of the scene in which 09 should hold big things for..

Touch screen controller, 4 track layoyt on Traktor Pro, funktion one = Win!

JORIS VOORN, played at nevermind last night to huge applause. Imagine 4 tracks going through traktor Pro, touch screen midi controller for effects + samples (I think) all going through the DJM800 mixer and you have a platform from something great!

This style is pioneered by Ritche Hawtin who reguarly mixes with 8 tracks or more while DJing over 2 mac books and A&H mixer...

The amazing thing is even though they may be 4 tracks going at one time the whole process is extremely organic in that every track flows and complements each other. This is as much a testament to the DJs skills as it is to the amazing software that is Traktor Pro. Sure your tracks are all beatmatched all for you but this just opens the door to more creative processes in DJing, so Im not complaining.

This shined in Joris set. I'll admit he is not one of my favourites, I own very little of Joris's tracks and past sets I have heard from him were only OK in my books but clearly he has progressed.

Promoting his new mix for the Balance CD series, which also come from Australia, he made it into the Guiness Book of records for the amazing fact that he 2 disk mix CD features 102 tracks!! Thats ridiculous! I'll definitely be getting a copy asap and giving you guys a review of it.

Back to Joris's set however, there is one word that I think summed up his entire set. funky. Funky tech-house, funky techno both the main staple of the set that had the whole dancefloor heaving throughout the night until the end of his set (somewhere after 4am). I think the man himself was enjoying it too going over time at the end.

Interview Excerpt with Robbie Lowe + COLOR Xmas Special

I came across this great interview with one of the most respected DJs in Australia, Sydney's Robbie Lowe. FULL STORY HERE

If you never heard the man DJ before then definitely come along to COLOR tomorrow night at the bunker. Color was a night spawned by the successfull 'underground' mix releases a couple of which have being done by Robbie Lowe, and let me tell for a FREE download mix these are quality, easily good enough to be sold on CD! I cant stop listening to them to be honest!

Check out the facebook COLOR GROUP here for all the latest releases...
