Space Cadets Podcast 001 - Nic Scali (& other Sets)

Its up! Took me a while to get working but Space Cadets now has a podcast which will feature one stand-out set from the night. So if you're lucky enough to be there or just cant go out Thursdays, you can now check what went down through itunes or whatever podcasting software you use.

What about the other sets you ask!? As usual all sets will be posted on the blog however only one will be selected for the podcast after each night.

Welcome to the Space Cadets Podcast! After each night a set, recorded live at Space Cadets, will be selected for the podcast showing off the awesome music and DJs who sweat it out each Thursday night.

To do the honours Space Cadet resident DJ Nic Scali delivers this epic set which had the place pumping till close sometime on Fri morning. Expect the chunky and slightly quirky house and techno stylings Nic's known for.

Mitch Crosher warm-up @ Space Cadets 13-08
After HUGE sound problems with the venue, Mitch got on the decks to deliever a great tech-house set. Scoring gigs all over the place Mitch is becoming known for his funk tech stylings.

Ash Le Rouge @ Space Cadets 13-08

Having already played at many other parties Le Rouge combined his disco edits with some minimalish tinged house before pushing it up a notch close to the end. Definitely one of the more pop-ier sets at Space Cadets

Alex Caminer @ Space Cadets 13-08
Alex jumped on to take it deep down into warped-house land. If you havent heard him already and you read this blog then your missing out.

Nic Scali @ Space Cadets 13-08

Space Cadets Thursdays are on again tomorrow night with a stellar student line-up.

If you missed the last edition then have a listen to the selection from last time.(Click to download directly)

James Burman @ Space Cadets Thursdays 07-09

Burman took the house down with a set that can be described best as deep-techno and house sounds. He seriously impressed myself and others and is now the official Space Cadets Zabelia Protégé!! Definitely have a listen.

Chris Leffers @ Space Cadets Thursdays 07-09
Chris Leffers stepped after to deliever his signiture blend of 'pop-infused' underground house and techno, always jamming and always goes down well.

Sets from 21st May

Space Cadets are on a break! That is only to return in July in special revamped, re-hyped, limited edition...haha.

So if your finding you need a Space Cadet fix check out these live recordings from the last Space Cadets which saw us pack out the bunker until early hours of Friday morning. Big-ups to Alex Caminer and our guests Osorio and Kit Phillips all of whom played wicked sets akin to their styles. Definitely worth checking out.

Space Cadets Recorded Sets, 21st May (Chronological order):
Nic Scali (47mb)Opened up the night with an hour and half of chilled yet driving music in typical Scali style. Chunky-rhythmic house and techno for your ears. As always gold tunes here.

Kit Phillips (40mb) last played an impromptu set after a DJ cancellation but we got him back to play a proper set this time showing off his housier and techno side. His got an eclectic taste in music with some intense tracks in this mix, but don't ask what genre they are unless you want to start a genre-definition war that is! Either way have a listen and you decide.

Osorio (40mb) Our first interstate guest originally coming from Aus-other-techno city Melbourne Osorio now based in Sydney treated us to an all vinyl set. There is definitely something about playing all vinyl, especially these days when everyone seems to be a CDJ-DJ however don't let that fool you he has some great tunes in here with some modern-classics (6.6!) and some of the newer goods with a set that gets into a groove and stays there, with a solid dance-floor by the end as a result. Have a listen for some toe-tapping action...

Alex Caminer (70mb) has being honing his skills on the Space Cadets decks now with a set at nearly every night. If anything this sets shows his cumulation of experience over the past few months with awesome taste in music and smoothing mixing skillzzz. I have no idea where or how he finds some of his tunes but it caused a riot in the bunker by the middle of this set and took us home until 2:30am on a Friday morning! Not bad considering many of us had work/uni that day! Ouch..

Space Cadets thurs night will return in July
There is also an upcoming DJ set release of some of the best sets from past few months, as always stay tuned to the blog for dates and DJs!

Space Cadets Recorded Sets

Finally got these sets up! Sorry for the delays. I recommend to anyone coming by/reading this blog to definitely check out these sets. Even if you dont know what 'Space Cadets' is (its a clubnight!) or wasn't there these recorded sets show some of the great students DJs on the Syd underground. In particular our past 2 guest DJs Jeremy Nothman and James Burman both whom played really good sets and both of whom have being added to Space Cadets 'rotating- residents'. (yeaha!)

Space Cadets on the 7th of May (In chronological order starting from 8pm):
James Burman @ Space Cadets 07-05-09: This is one superb funked up mix. Its a great show of talent to this once more 'commercial' DJ but luckily he has come to the 'dark' side.. Some of the latest house and tech-house tunes combined with James's great mixing creates a great flow and is a mix Ive had trouble stop listening too! Trust me you will be hearing more of this DJ in the future.

Nic Scali: Space Cadet resident jumped on after to deliver the late-night goods with some slaming tech, techno and progressive tracks. So, "Why do we dance?"...

Chris Leffers: Chris jumped on after Nic (around 12:30pm) to deliver some twisted electronic-discotecha! He seriously impressed us last time around with his great track-selection, effortlessly progressing through genres of electronica so we had to get him back for another. Its a great moody mix which kept the dance-floor buzzing until 2am, not bad considering it was a Thursday night.

Space Cadets club night 23rd April
Jeremy Nothman is perhaps the only DJ, so far, we have had the pleasure of putting on that insists on playing only-vinyl. And it is a welcomed thing to see these awesome deep-house tracks blare out through there analogue grooves. I believe if your to play only-vinyl, then it should be reflected in some quality lesser known tracks and that's exactly what's happened here. Have a listen, its great mix for chilling out (it was the first set of the night!).

Zushy Woolstone is a DJ who likes his long slots (I blogged on his 3hr mixtape while back) which is kind of why we gave all the DJs one and half hour slots for this night. With this guy you can hear the clear progression of tracks from the laid back-house at the begging to some proper techno at the end. A very nice mix.

Jamie Tek A little mix from myself with a collection of some new minimal stuff of the past few weeks and songs Ive being playing out over the past few months. Feedback always appreciated!

Alex Caminer
Space Cadet resident Caminer drove home the grooves with this closing set. As always gold tunes in here.

Space Cadets DJ sets from 9th April, easter special!

Easily our most successful Space Cadets since starting this little night a few months back. Musically the sets by everyone were seriously top-notch! I heard some amazing new tunes as well as great mixing by all. Have a listen to the sets, you'll not be disappointed. We had packed dance floor throughout the night right until closing time at 5am! If it wasn't for the Easter Friday laws (every pub and club must close at 5am for some reason, argh) we would of gone on for longer!

A Huge Thank you goes out to Robbie Lowe who played an excellent set taking us through some great new progressive and house tunes as well as Dane Austin who treated us with a live set (check the video below) with the deep, techy and even a little dubstep sounds of Mr Austin. Also our headlining VJ Darko showed us 'how its done' with a great array of colourful, trippy and bizarre visuals and graphics, however words really cant do justice for VJs so definitely come and check him out at a future Space Cadets if your around the area.

Other DJs on the night were myself (Jamie Tek) managing to bash out some Audion, the new Reboot new track Ronson, which was extremely well received, as well as some Daypyk and some awesome new Tom Clark & Daniel Dreier tracks. Unfortunately my recorder lost its 'juice' halfway through my set so consider it a littler taster of what happened in those early hours. Also after my set Timmy Maxwell dropped by for a 'surprise' set with me, Timmy and Alex playing tunes until close.

Chris Leffers started the night out with some extremely funky minimal house tracks that were perfect to get the groove going, after which Nic Scali took over to give us a good dosage of some of the lastest tech-house and minimal tracks going around right now. Alex Caminer warmed up for Robbie Lowe with a great moody techno track selection that had the floor heaving. Think italoboyz and Radioslave latest monster Koma Koma.

Space Cadets DJ sets from 5th March

Decked out with action hero's of the past hanging around the club (check pictures) Space Cadets was another banging night with a small but dedicated crowd of music lovers coming in throughout the night. Arguably the festivities of weekend ahead (Mardi Gras + the million other club nights on) took away a little from our past crowds but nevertheless we ended up finishing around 1am with a packed dance-floor!

Visual wise LayerOne again filled up the bunker with some far-out visuals that had the whole place turning in colour. There was also a preview clip of Stimming and Solomun 'Music video' I did with a couple of other mates but more on that later.. Darko had to canel at the last second but will be with us at a later Space Cadets!

Music wise it was another treat with Kit Phillips warming up the decks after only 3 hours notice! Kit played a little of everything from house to a little drum and bass setting the stage nicely for the relative new-comers, the duo JDub.

J Dub smashed out a great techno set. They clearly have a wide variety of musical tastes and this showed through the many forms of techno they played. A rolling techno set and one to get anyone in the mood for having a party! Also check out King James online radio show Music Is The Answer
Download link: http://www.mediafire.com/file/dmdwmjzdwdm/JDub 5th March Space Cadets.mp3

Jamie Tek jumped on after JDub to deliver some unreleased treats to a chilled out bunker. It was a kind of experimental set for me as I melded some track originals and remixes back to back that worked in some ways but then also lost intensity pretty quickly when not properly phrased....Anyway it was a whole heap of new minimal tracks from Reboot, Heinrichs & Hertenfellner and Loco Dice remixes.

Element picked up the pace turning to his 'epic-prog' and big room techno style he is now some-what known for. Some new tracks from DNox and Beckers as well as some 'new' classics like Joris Voorn Dark Flower Remix. Solid techno & prog set for all you prog-heads out there!

Nic Scali took on the late-shift duties with a seriously good set of tech-house,techno and minimal tracks that were quirky, a little ambient at times but always enough dance-floor edge to keep the packed dance-floor moving. We finished up at 1am but could easily gone to 2! Oh Well, next time!

Space Cadets - recap, sets & pics

"Space cadets are go!"

Space Cadets on 12th of February was another great instalment of this new Thursday night and I have the audio, pictures and videos here to prove it!

All DJs played excellent sets but don't take my word for it check them out in the brand spanking new audio-player I'll be using from now on! With a little help from my friends at Yahoo as well, and to download the sets RIGHT-CLICK and select download ;)

Also all pictures were taken by good friend DMS who has a great eye for photos, check out his awesome collection of pics at his flickr photos stream here

Space Cadets 12th Feb

Andrew Myers - Warmed up the night bringing out some big techno tunes early but definitely set the mood of the night with more 'intense' tunes. Unfortunately I forgot to hit the record button but check him out with Alex Caminer below. Looking forward to his next set for sure!

Jamie Tek - http://www.mediafire.com/file/tmziqmmdchm/Jame Tek 12thfeb.mp3
I took over and played a great set, if I dont say so myself. Minimal techno was the order of the day with some brand new Luciano remixes of Loco Dices album, Stimming & Solomon songs that were EP only releases as well as some up n comers taken direct out of Richie Hawtins mix CD, Sound of Can Elles.

Living Room DJs - http://www.mediafire.com/file/eoyymvzu2oj/LivingRoom-DJs-12thfeb.mp3
Played a banging set of techno and Prog-house which really got the peeps dancing, the set flowed through nicely with some sasha remixes, I beleive, making there way through as well as some other techno that I can remember now. It was not too overwhelming (as prog can sometimes be ) but not to mellow so fitted well with the mood at that point, in other words a great set!

Zushy Woolstone - http://www.mediafire.com/file/2imtzvglyod/Zushy Woolstone 12thFeb.mp3
3hr mixtape man jumps on to take us back into the tech-house/minimal-house direction of the night with some funky tunes to keep everyone dancing. He definitely was building it up towards the end as Zushy prefers long slots to DJs so next time he'll get it! Have a listen above as there are some seriously good tunes to be heard.

Alex Caminer & Andrew Myers - http://www.mediafire.com/file/mnomncihdej/Alex Caminer and Andrew Myers.mp3
Alex Caminer, resident space cadet!, played half a set before going B2B with Andrew myers. They played a great techno set with some so-hot-right-now tracks, think Steve Lawler - Kalimba, as well as some great underground tracks.

LayerOne - Space Cadet resident VJ kicked things off with great visuals all night, my highlights included the dancing girl (check youtube vid below), space ship (above), cubes and many other random objects. Be sure to come check him out next time as well!

NEXT SPACE CADETS IS 5TH OF MARCH!
